. No updates in a couple days again, yes it is true. Things have been a bit hectic in the New Year. Anyway I am back today and have a couple decent reads. This past week was a very interesting week for news, the Eldred cause, weapons in Iraq, and responses to the Bush tax cut plan. On the second point, it looks as if the war will materialize. Personally I have been betting against it, even more so now that North Korea is on the radar, but that has all changed. The end all result other than the death of Hussein is up in the air of course. In other news, my Wake Forest Demon Deacons looked strong last night in defeating the Maryland Terps on our home court. This makes up for the horrific loss at the hands of the evil evil Dookies. Anyway on to the links…
New Glenn Reynolds blog (aka instapundit) on msnbc.com. He includes this insightful blurb on the Eldred decision that upheld the Sonny Bono Act extending copywrites from 75 years after the authors death to 95 years (the Mickey Mouse law as it has been called because Mickey was about to become public property pre Sonny Act).
In passing the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act, Congress drastically extended copyrights, including some dating back when my daughter’s great-grandmother was born. Many people thought this was unconstitutional: how can nearly a century of copyright protection be considered a “limited time,” — especially when Congress keeps extending it? And how can rewarding people who have been dead for decades produce more creativity?
A fun fictional piece by Cory Doctrow that is an enjoyable read. He also has his latest book on-line(Down and Out in The Magic Kingdom and you can dl it for free from this site. I just started it and should have it done this weekend, so I'll let you know how it is.
Fun onion piece on why because of North Korea, we must invade Iraq.
Another great article from one of the editors of the Economist asking about what will be the eventual fate of our great (most of the time) country.
